Worldwide Picks: - USA - Australia/NZ - Canada - France - Germany - Spain - Italy - Norway - Sweden - Denmark - Brazil - Asia
What makes a Yahoo! UK & Ireland Pick of the Week? Sometimes it's a site that makes us laugh, sometimes it's one that's being talked about, other times it's because they're quirky, useful or just plain interesting. If you have any suggestions for cool sites to be included in a future Picks of the Week, why not send us an email? If you only want to view the list of this week's picks, click here.
"Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot..."
While you're all out playing with your sparklers and launching rockets, the Picks Team have been cooped up behind their desks bringing you their web choice of the week - with ne'er a firework in sight. We work hard for you guys.
The successful 365 Corporation pioneered by broadcaster and journalist Danny Kelly has come up trumps again with its new site following in the footsteps of its popular Football, Rugby, Cricket and Music sites. Personals365 is the new venture, promising fun and easy chat, dating and romance on line. There's free membership until November 15th, and unlike some sites that insist you sign up straight away, Personals365 gives you the chance to look around and browse the site with no obligation. So if you're looking for a romantic relationship or just some friends to chat to, Personals365 is a colourful place to begin.
Talking of couples, perhaps you've seen recent Boddingtons adverts featuring the animated antics of a cow called Graham and foxy lady called Claudia. Now the pair have been given their very own site. Graham and Claudia is split into two sections, one for Graham, and one for... erm... Claudia. It's a strange affair, there's not really a lot going on here. Graham the cow (who looks more like a horse) allows you to pierce his udders or you can watch him 'strutting his stuff' on the dance floor. Claudia meanwhile lets you download some pics or watch the ads online and... erm... that's about it. There's not a huge amount of content here, but it's a fun diversion for a few minutes, with no doubt more stuff to be added in the future.
A cow of a very different sort next, this time it's The Amazing Oscillating Ovine. This is certainly a quick one-stop fun site - choose a flavour for your milk shake and watch your cow and browser window mysteriously shake (or perhaps that should be 'oscillate') at high speed. Do it a few times, staring deep into your monitor, and you may just start feeling a tad queazy...
Perhaps the Picks Team this week is animal obsessed - you've got to doubt our sanity sometimes - for the next site is Sheepnet which boldly claims to be the only sheep site you'll ever need to put in your favourites folder. With its dancing sheep gifs and colourful presentation, there's all manner of fun for the sheep enthusiast here. There's plenty of pictures of breeds, some downloads, a feature on Shaun the Sheep from 'Wallace & Grommit' and even some interesting facts about our friendly bovines. Did you know that the heaviest sheep was a ram called Stradford Whisper? In March of 1991 he weighed 247 kg and was a little over 1 metre high. Amazing stuff.
Back to some kind of sanity with our final pick this week, but then again, the folks at Foocha! don't take themselves too seriously, and that's precisely why the site is a winner. Dubbing itself as the UK's most outspoken website, Foocha! covers music, media, movies, books and techie stuff. The reviews are suitably sardonic, sometimes acerbic, always honest and there's a massive amount of content here to get your teeth into. From Palm Pilots to Futurama, there should be something here for everyone. In addition, it's nicely presented, often funny, sharply written and deserves as much attention as it can get. A labour of love rather than a corporate endeavour, Foocha! proves that a site with decent content and writing can more than hold its own in the commercialy dominated Internet market.
