Advice for using Yahoo! Mail
|
1. Be careful when receiving attachments. Always use Yahoo!'s in-built Norton Antivirus to check for viruses. Read more on virus checking.
2. Be wary of giving out your email address to avoid unsolicited mail.
Often when you register for a service via the Internet you are given the option in the small print to opt out of receiving emails from that company, or other business to whom they sell their mailing lists. Ensure you read the small print carefully especially where there is a checkbox, so that you know whether you want the checkbox ticked. By rushing through a registration process without due care, you could find yourself allowing a company a free reign to distribute your email address. You should be as careful giving out your email address as you are giving out your home telephone number.
3. Spend some time going through your options to make your Yahoo! email account
most suitable for your needs. Filters and POP access for example, are popular features that can enhance your email experience.
4. If you receive any unsolicited emails you should not reply to them as this
can exacerbate the problem. Instead you should consider using a filter to
prevent mails reaching your Inbox, and also use the link 'Send to Yahoo! for review'. One common spamming technique, known as 'chain mailing' is where you receive an email requesting that you forward it to a number of your friends. This ploy allows multiple active email addresses to be collected for the purpose of large scale spamming to those who responded to the original chain mail.
5. If you are being spammed repeatedly take a look at the domain. This is the part after the @ sign of an email address or the last part of the server name in a URL. For example, the URL of abc@bogus.com has a domain of simply bogus.com. Once you have the domain, you can look up the administrative contact at InterNIC.
Once you've done a successful lookup, simply email the entire message (including full headers) to the person listed as the administrative contact. Explain your situation.
6. Take advantage of Yahoo! Address Book. Yahoo! Address Book and the address book found in Yahoo! Mail use the same underlying contact information. Therefore, you can access all of your contact information through your Yahoo! Mail account or directly through your Yahoo! Address Book.
7. Be aware of your computer's virus protection. If you are using a computer at work, speak to your system administrator to discover your company's policy on dealing with viruses and email attachments. If you are a home user you should ensure that your computer is suitably protected from viruses. You can search on Yahoo! Shopping for antivirus software to protect your computer.
8. Always take care when receiving attachments. You should not open any attachments when you do not know the sender. When receiving any attachments always take a look at the extension. You should be particularly vigilant with any attachments that have the extension .exe and .vbs as these files are programs which will run on your computer when you double click on them. Be sure you know what a file is before you open it.
9. Be careful when sending attachments. Do not forward attachments unless you have had them checked for viruses. It may be more efficient to place a file in Yahoo! Briefcase or Yahoo! Photos and then offer the recipient the opportunity to download the file, by including a link in the email to your Briefcase or Photos. Many companies operate firewalls that prevent certain attachments entering their system. For this reason, using tools like Briefcase and Photos should ensure that emails reach the desired recipients Inbox. If you are going to send an attachment you should firstly read our guidelines.
