First Internet FIFA World Cup Brings Commercial Support of 45 Companies to FIFAworldcup.com, the Most Popular Sports Event Web Site Ever

 

 

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - July 1, 2002 - FIFAworldcup.com, the Official Web site of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™, has become recognized as the most popular sports event Web site in Internet history. The collaboration between FIFA, football's governing body, and Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), producer/commercial marketer of FIFAworldcup.com and Official FIFA Partner, secured commercial marketing support from more than 45 companies, including Official FIFA Partners adidas, Budweiser, MasterCard International, Royal Philips Electronics and Toshiba, as well as other third-party world-class marketers United Airlines, Kraft and Nintendo. Web site traffic-the most by a single event sports Web site-recorded more than 1.7 billion page views from 31 May through 29 June, with total traffic expected to surpass two billion page views by tournament's end.

Along with the eight FIFAworldcup.com Global Partners, the site secured 11 Regional Supporters, including Blockbuster Inc., Disney, Motorola and Sears, and 26 local language advertisers, including FOX, HSBC and JVC.

Regional and local advertisers were also able to effectively reach their target audiences both geographically or by language."

As part of its multi-year relationship with FIFA, Yahoo! will produce and commercially market the Official Web site during the next FIFA World Cup-2006 in Germany-as well as maintain its marketing rights as an Official FIFA Partner during the FIFA Women's World Cup China PR 2003, 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany and at additional FIFA events.
