Yahoo! and FIFA Soon to Offer Chinese as Seventh Language
BEIJING, China - March 28, 2002 - Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), producer and commercial marketer of FIFAworldcup.com, and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world governing body of football, today announced the addition of the Chinese language to FIFAworldcup.com (http://www.FIFAworldcup.com), the official Web site of the 2002 FIFA World Cup™. Accessible in mid-April, Simplified Chinese becomes the seventh official language on FIFAworldcup.com, joining Japanese, Korean, English, French, German, and Spanish. Yahoo! and FIFA also announced that the Chinese Language version of FIFAworldcup.com will be presented by HSBC, one of the world's largest banking and financial services organizations.
Football is the most popular sport in China, and enthusiasm for China's "League A" team-a first-time qualifier in the FIFA World Cup -- is at an all-time high. A recent survey showed that more than 30 football matches televised between January and September 2001 drew a cumulative viewing audience of 2.5 billion people.
